Tartine Bakery

This is not the first time we have written about Tartine. This bakery made our top 12 bakeries in the world list.

Based out of San Fransisco, the home of sourdough bread in the US, Tartine offers the best sourdough bread in California. This bread is wonderfully fermented and has an open crumb and a slightly chewy texture with a crust that will crunch in your head. In addition to a great selection of bread, this place has a great atmosphere and a wonderful culinary experience overall.

You might find the lines long but they are definitely worth the wait which gives you time to soak in the atmosphere along with the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread. Plus, depending on the location you visit, you might be able to watch a little part of the production process.

The Alabama St. location has a partially open concept bakery that you can peek into, as well as a large oven facing the shop where you can see some of their wonderfully artisanal and tempting bread emerge into the world greeted by a happy baker and onlooking spectators alike.

Aside from bread and many other classic and innovative pastries they also make one of the best almond croissants that you will ever have. Just keep in mind – this is not a good time to think about your diet and it’s so worth it.

Again, depending on which location you go to, you can either stop by for a quick bite and a latte or a full sit down meal that will surely not disappoint. Tartine approaches their food the same way they do their bread and pastries, it has classic traditional elements, is creative, real and delicious without being pretentious.

Tartine has also produced a couple of great baking books. They are wonderful inspirational baking books that are highly recommended and will also look great on your coffee table.
